PC STEM Club Partners with NASA to Offer Native Skywatchers Constellation Workshop

The Peninsula College STEM Club is partnering with NASA to bring a unique workshop to the ʔaʔkʷustəŋáw̕ txʷ House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse, January 9 at 1:00 pm.

“Native Skywatchers: Bringing Together Cultural and  Scientific Knowledge of the Stars” is a workshop that builds on combined decades of experience in what is known as “dual-learning,” or the weaving together of cultural and scientific knowledge, stories, and hands-on activities in an environment where neither is dominant over the other.

Annette Lee is an astrophysicist and artist and the Director of the Native Skywatchers research and programming initiative. She has over 28 years of experience in education as a teacher, university instructor, teacher educator, program administrator, professional visual artist, and researcher.

Lee’s Native Skywatchers, and collaborator Daniella Scalice’s  NASA and the Navajo Nation project, form the basis of the pedagogical approach of dual-learning.   

The workshop will focus on three constellations—Wakinyan-Thunderbird, To Win/Tun Win-Blue Spirit Woman and Maang-Loon- grounding participants in their location in the night sky and the knowledge contained in their stories.  The presenters will then introduce astronomy and astrobiology concepts that correspond, relate, and resonate: Wakinyan-Thunderbird with precession; To Win/Tun Win-Blue Spirit Woman with stellar nucleosynthesis; and Maang-Loon with Solar System formation. In each case, the presenters will introduce scientific hands-on activities or labs, and participants will work in groups to expand them, to reflect and teach the cultural knowledge they have learned.
